First, what are drivers? In essence, your computer is a powerful mind that you lets you connect to many other tools that help do "things" – these can be – scanning, copying, printing, playing video games, using USB memory, use webcams, listen to music, watch movies, and much more. The Device Drivers (where device can be any of the device mentioned above) are software that the device manufacturer provides to ensure that their device can work with your computer. This driver gets installed when you first use your device, whether printer, scanner, etc. The Problem: What often happens is that these drivers get updated, outdated. This can happen for several reasons: you may upgrade your operating system – from Windows 2000 to XP (as an example), however, your printer driver may not work with Windows XP. You will get error messages and you will not be able to use your printer until you have updated your driver. How Do You Pick Device Driver Update Software?

Our last review of this class of software revealed that there are 3 major providers, and over 20 providers who offer copycat products which look nice, but don’t do the work, and do not maintain their driver database. This report focuses on the top three providers, and is updated quarterly to either modify (1) our findings; and/or (2) expand the list to other worthy products. What should you consider when looking to buy Driver Update Software?

• Driver Database: Ultimately, the Driver is only as good as its (1) database, and (2) the support team to ensure that if a driver is missing they will update it for you as soon as possible. The three we recommended offer a Free Scan to make sure they can "prove" that they can pick correct the driver error on your computer before you register/pay for product.
• Features: Not all Driver Update Software is created equal. In advanced versions, the system will only recommend drivers that are compatible with you Operating System, this seems obvious but many application we looked at it; did not offer any such filtering which can cause confusion as to which is applicable.
• Ease of Use: The concept of drivers is foreign to most people. Most people know the printer should work, but not how to fix it when the get a Driver Error. The Driver Update software should be user friendly with simple steps that anyone can use otherwise you may make a mistake which could cause more errors. There were some products that were very advanced, but 90% of the population could not use the tool
• Support: No matter how easy a tool is, it is important to know that if you have a question the company stands behind the product. Companies that made our review either offer live help by telephone or email.
• Cost: Average price is approximately $40. There are some free driver updates that you can get from the manufacturers, but that will require you to make sure you get the exact driver based on your device, and operating system, ensure you install it correctly – an error may slow down your computer, possibly cause errors to other devices, etc. Therefore we rather pay for something that we know works rather take a chance.
